The first driver of AI demand in the Canaries is tourism, though not for the reason usually pitched. Tourist spending in the archipelago reached 23,185 million euros in 2025, 3.9% more than the previous year, and it concentrated in Tenerife (39.4%) and Gran Canaria (27.1%), according to ISTAC (16 February 2026). That split is precisely why this page covers both provinces rather than a single island. The same body notes that visitors from the United Kingdom, Germany and the rest of Spain contribute the most spending, which means hotels, inbound operators, car rental firms and retailers routinely serve customers in three or four languages. A voice or chat agent trained on the property's own vocabulary handles the booking, the date change or the transfer question without needing someone on shift who speaks German at eleven at night. It is a less glamorous use case than most, and a considerably faster one to pay back.
The second lever is the documentary workload the archipelago imposes. The five ports run by the Las Palmas Port Authority moved 36.52 million tonnes in 2025 (Canarias7, 26 January 2026). Behind that figure sit customs clearances, single administrative documents, certificates of origin and delivery notes that an equivalent mainland company never has to touch. Then there is the archipelago's own framework: Law 19/1994 of 6 July, amending the Canary Islands Economic and Fiscal Regime, created the Canary Islands Special Zone in its Title V, and transactions carried out in the Canaries are invoiced with IGIC, the tax governed by Law 20/1991, rather than Spanish VAT. The third point is about method. The Canary Islands Statute of Autonomy (Organic Law 1/2018 of 5 November) recognises remoteness, insularity and outermost-region status in its Article 3, and refers explicitly to double insularity in Article 37.12. For an AI project, that translates into something concrete: coordination runs on video calls and shared documentation from day one, and the network infrastructure is finally keeping pace. Canalink, a public company owned by the Tenerife island council, is deploying the RING Project, a 553-kilometre subsea ring linking Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote with a 34 million euro investment, 23 million of it from the European Union's CEF Digital programme (Data Center Market, 29 July 2026).
